One of the most common questions that we get asked as a choir is, “what exactly is a madrigal?” and even following our passionate explanations (for madrigalisti are a passionate people) we can never be sure that we have been understood.

It is one thing to be told the features of a madrigal – secular, polyphonic music often sung in small groups, without accompaniment, and most common during the Renaissance – but it is another entirely to listen to the lavish poetry, rich harmonies and deep emotions that made madrigals the music of the people during a time that was essentially a revolution in the arts, politics, science and literature.

Tonight, we hope to show you brief moments of the evolution of the genre, from (Arcadelt?) and some of the earliest recorded madrigals, to later (imaginings/renditions?) of the form, and even some modern interpretations of the madrigal. We hope that by the end of the night you will be one step closer to an understanding of just what the f*drigal a madrigal is.
